Interview: Tadanobu Asano on Yabushige’s Motivations and Allegiances in ‘Shōgun’

This year’s most nominated series at the Emmy Awards is Shōgun, a monumental adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel set in Japan in the 1600s. Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is the revered leader who relies heavily on English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) and interpreter Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) as he plots the future of his community amid treacherous elements, including Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), whose loyalties aren’t as clear-cut as they should be.

Awards Buzz spoke with Asano, with the assistance of interpreter Midori Wong, about the complexities of making this epic series. Watch the video above to hear how he feels about Yabushige’s arc and where audiences can see him next.

Tadanobu Asano is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. Shōgun is available to stream on Hulu.
