Composer Volker Bertelmann’s previous collaboration with director Edward Berger, All Quiet on the Western Front, earned him an Oscar, and now he’s in the awards conversation again for the music of Conclave. Bertelmann is very busy with many other projects, including two upcoming high-profile TV versions of popular properties, Dune: Prophecy and The Day of the Jackal.
Awards Buzz spoke with Bertelmann about reteaming with Berger and what he drew upon to make the music for the film. Watch the video above to hear about his process of working with the film’s changing tone and incorporating particular instruments into the score.
