The Latest Happening:
The recent premiere of Season 3, featuring Zach Gilford as Elias Voit, delivered a mind-blowing closeout that sets the stage for the next nine episodes. The Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) of the FBI certainly has their work cut out for them yet again. While “Criminal Minds” originally ran for 15 seasons before the 2022 reboot as “Evolution”, the new series maintains the original’s deranged tone by focusing on a single case for longer periods. Both iterations consistently delve into violent and dangerous characters, showcasing the intelligent team members dedicated to stopping them.
As for Voit, Elias Voit is a particularly complex and intriguing character. Introduced in “Criminal Minds: Evolution” Season 1 (also known as “Criminal Minds” Season 16) in the episode “Just Getting Started,” Voit, whose real name is Lee Duval, is a serial killer with a wife and two daughters. Season 1 focused on the BAU’s efforts to pin the murders on him and his terrifying network of killers, known as unsubs. In a flashback to 2005 from “Just Getting Started,” Gilford’s character was introduced as the main antagonist, shown butchering a man named John Harris alive. Described as a prolific and psychopathic serial killer, Voit is now supposedly disgusted by his criminal tendencies after waking from a six-month coma. This sudden shift to “good guy” status is a tough pill to swallow, yet he now aids the BAU in locating members of his infamous Sicarius network, including a recent case involving a father who buries his victims alive.

Despite being in a six-month coma for most of the “Criminal Minds: Evolution” Season 3 premiere, Voit remains horrifying. Adam Rodriguez, who plays Luke Alvez, perfectly described the premiere as “dark and completely diabolical evil.” Voit is a deeply layered character, unlike beloved star Matthew Gray Gubler’s Spencer Reid, he has no redeemable qualities, but his captivating presence makes him impossible to look away from.
Fans will be relieved to know that “Criminal Minds” has been renewed for a nineteenth season, and despite initial questions about Gilford’s absence from the cast photo, you won’t be free of Voit anytime soon!
