Interview: Ali Abbasi and Maria Bakalova on Ivana Trump, Sebastian Stan, and Crafting ‘The Apprentice’
October 10, 2024You’re the hottest sous chef in New York and now it’s time to branch out on your own and prove you have what it takes! Prove that you have the grit, the determination, the balls to get it done! At least that’s how Chef (Ariana DeBose) sees it in Blumhouse’s latest thriller House of Spoils. In House of Spoils we follow Chef as she embarks on a journey as Executive Chef of a cute upstate eatery ran out of an mansion filled with what can only be described as “gothic charm.” As soon as she arrives things begin to feel out of place and her well laid plans go awry.
Awards Buzz first sat with DeBose to talk about Chef’s possible future as a witchy woman and the fine line between witches and women who don’t put men at the center of their worlds. DeBose also spoke about embodying Chef’s toxic traits and sometimes being the red flag herself. “I think viewers will be surprised by what they take away from [the film]” she told me as she spoke about the twists, turns and overall impact she’d like the film to have.
Afterwards, we sat with the writing and directing team Danielle Krudy and Bridget Savage Cole to discuss the alchemy of House of Spoils. We spoke about the culinary and spiritual origins of the film and how House of Spoils was about much more than a female chef. Chef’s story is more than a hero’s journey, it’s a fantastic metaphor about life as a modern day woman trying to find her place in a male-dominated industry. We talk about Barbie Ferreira and Chef’s relationship with the women in her world and her evolution as a “girl’s girl.”
House of Spoils is streaming on Prime Video.
