Interview: Lorcan Finnegan on the Look and Feel of ‘The Surfer’ and Exploring Cultural and Identity Dynamics

In Lorcan Finnegan’s The Surfer, an unnamed man (Nicolas Cage) returns to the place he grew up, ready to pull the trigger on buying his childhood home. But when he encounters vicious resistance to his presence from the surfing community on the beach, he remains committed to standing his ground, even as he sacrifices everything for a shot at the idyllic happiness he’s wanted for so long.

Awards Buzz spoke with Finnegan about debuting the film at Cannes and screening it at festivals around the world, including its recent showing at SXSW. Watch the video above to hear how he feels Cage being American affects the film’s premise and how they accomplished the visual misery his character experiences.

The Surfer opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 2nd.
