Interview: Krys Marshall on ‘Paradise’ Season 2, The Power of Her Saying NO, The Glory of Saying YES, Sterling K. Brown Being a Mogul & More!

“I think that we have in a really cool way resonated with audiences that maybe folks didn’t expect. We’ve had a really enormous response from black audiences, from female audiences, and mainstream audiences.”

Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz recently had an opportunity to catch-up with Krys Marshall, star of the hit series “Paradise,” where she plays the compelling character Agent Robinson. It was truly the perfect way to kick off what I’m sure will be an amazing weekend, and our conversation offered deep insights into her thoughts on the show’s recent Emmy nominations and her remarkable career journey.

The interview highlighted the significant Emmy recognition “Paradise” has received, with both Krys and the show securing multiple nominations in major categories. It’s clear the show has resonated powerfully with diverse audiences, especially Black and female viewers, proving that diverse casting absolutely creates mainstream, bankable content, even amidst ongoing discussions about “DEI being over.” We also delved into Marshall’s career path, which she describes as taking the “long way” through consistent excellence in smaller roles, building strong relationships along the way. Her breakthrough came from a small but pivotal role in “This Is Us,” where she first worked with Sterling, now her co-star in “Paradise.” It was fascinating to learn that showrunner Dan Fogelman specifically envisioned Krys for the role of Agent Robinson. Krys spoke highly of Dan’s talent for creating multidimensional Black characters, noting how Agent Robinson defies stereotypes by being both tough and vulnerable, navigating complex relationship dynamics and personal insecurities. She also shared an exciting teaser for Season 2, revealing that it will explore both the bunker and Earth’s surface, introduce new cast members like Thomas Doherty and Shailene Woodley, and delve into the lives of survivors with limited resources after being “left behind” and the aftermath of a coup and presidential murder within the bunker.

Beyond her professional achievements, Marshall shared how she successfully balances motherhood with her flourishing career, emphasizing her commitment to working with good people in positive environments over just prestigious projects. It was inspiring to hear about her personal growth, including how she’s learning business aspects from Sterling, who serves as both her co-star and an executive producer on the show. Finally, the excitement around her first Emmy nomination and attendance was palpable; she conveyed both nervousness and immense joy about celebrating this significant milestone and shared her plans for a bright, colorful look at the ceremony.

Overall, the interview truly showcased Krys’s deep gratitude, unwavering professionalism, and thoughtful approach to both her craft and her career development. Check out the full interview below:

Hulu renewed “Paradise” for a second season back in February! Creator Dan Fogelman has shared that he has a “very precise three-year plan” for the show, with this upcoming season serving as the middle part of that trilogy. The first season opened with a truly unique premise, revealing a post-apocalyptic world where 25,000 survivors escaped a catastrophic climate event into an underground bunker society called Paradise. Season two promises to expand beyond the bunker, introducing new characters and exploring more of the “outside world.” You can expect to see returning main cast members like Sterling K. Brown, Julianne Nicholson, and Sarah Shahi, with new additions Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty joining in recurring roles.

Filming began in March 2025, and while there’s no official release date yet, an early 2026 release is anticipated. “Paradise” streams on Hulu, so you’ll be able to catch the new season there. And here’s a teaser Krys Marshall shared during an exclusive interview with Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz:

“How much can I say without getting sued? Season two is a different world. It really is a different world. Dan has already spilled the tea that we spend time on the Earth’s surface. And so it really literally is a different world with a new cast of characters, with a new cast of people, we get to see who remains and how they remained. So our show, in its essence is a sort of doomsday show, but because we were in the bunker, we got to see this pristine, perfect world that Sinatra and her cronies have manufactured. And so we’ll spend a lot of time on the Earth’s surface and getting to see what does life look like for the folks who got left behind? How did they survive with limited resources? What changes in a human being to be able to survive in a sort of fallout environment like that?”

“Anybody who knows me knows that I’m rarely satisfied. I mean, something can go really well and I’m still like, oh, it could have gone a little bit better. So I tend to keep my eyes on my own paper. I don’t really think so much about the other girls in the business.”
