Interview: Rhea Seehorn on Companionship, Solitude, and Saving the Human Race in Albuquerque in ‘Pluribus’

In Pluribus, an alien race assimilates almost the whole of humanity into a single hive mind – save for thirteen people. Among them is Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), who isn’t on board with the pleasant nature of this single shared consciousness and is resolute about finding a way to fight back.

Awards Buzz spoke with Seehorn about reteaming with Vince Gilligan after the success of Better Call Saul and returning to Albuquerque. When asked about whether this role has made her long for companionship or solitude, she had a firm and balanced answer:

“I remain steadfastly in the position that I’ve come to accept and not try to change in the last chapter of my life, which is I am definitively fifty-fifty. Fifty percent introvert, fifty percent extrovert, and I can tell when one is not being fed, there’s a disruption. I am both. Can’t wait to see my family that I haven’t seen in a while for the holidays and then I promise you, I’m probably immediately going to be like, okay, now I need a week to sit in a corner and stare at a wall.”

She doesn’t find the experience of shooting isolating, thanks to a wealth of wonderful collaborators:

“Luckily, I do have brilliant costars. They give me a lot to work with, and I spent significant amount of time with the brilliant Karolina Wydra, who is just incredible and doing such a deceptively difficult role deftly. Any time I got to do scenes with Samba Schutte or Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Miriam Shor playing my wife Helen, Jeff Hiller, there’s just so many of them that, always, the energy butting up against each other, certainly with Karolina, Carlos-Manuel, and Samba, were just inherently dramatic and comedic at the same time because they’re such opposing energies. They’re so different. That was always fun. As far as the filming of lots and lots of scenes alone, it’s challenging, for sure, but it’s all a very interesting exploration to go with just my crew, that I’m very, very close with, and with Vince Gilligan and whomever our writer and director might be and map out, what are the story beats that are happening.”

Watch the video above to hear what she’d like to see in season two and ha tit’s been like for the show to receive such a positive reception.

Season one of Pluribus is streaming on Apple TV.
