Oscar Predictions: Best Cinematography

Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd. This is the first time a shortlist has been announced for this category, limiting the possible nominees to among these sixteen films.

The shortlist:

Maura Herce (Sirât)
Amy Vincent (Song Sung Blue)

Claudio Miranda was nominated in 2008 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and won in 2012 for The Life of Pi, though he was snubbed in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick when many thought he was the frontrunner. James Friend won this prize that year for All Quiet on the Western Front. Lukasz Zal was previously nominated for two Polish films, Ida and Cold War. Dan Laustsen was nominated for his two most recent collaborations with director Guillermo Del Toro, The Shape of Water and Nightmare Alley, and Robbie Ryan was nominated for two past collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite and Poor Things. Darius Khondji was nominated for Evita in 1996 and Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths in 2022. Seamus McGarvey was nominated in 2007 for Atonement and in 2012 for Anna Karenina. Alice Brooks was not nominated last year despite being a contender for the first Wicked film.

Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Train Dreams have all been nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers. The British Society of Cinematographers swapped out Train Dreams for Die My Love.
