Interview: Eric Kripke, Karen Fukuhara & Erin Moriarty on Choosing a Side and Penis Wrinkles in ‘The Boys’

In the fifth and final season of The Boys, it’s the last standoff between good and evil as a long-in-the-works plan to kill Homelander for good is met with countless obstacles, betrayals, and blood-soaked deaths. This show, known for its crazy moments, goes even more all-out than ever before as it signs off for good.

Awards Buzz spoke with showrunner Eric Kripke and stars Karen Fukuhara and Erin Moriarty on some of the craziest moments they remember from the show. Kripke shared one of his most beloved traditions that could only happen on this show:

“One of my favorite parts of the job is arguing with standards and practices. The negotiations are hilarious. For example, they have a standard where you’re not allowed to show an erect penis. In season three, we have Termite crawling into this penis that’s on the table and the notes are like, that penis looks too erect. You need to add wrinkles. And then we’ll negotiate over the amount of wrinkles, me and Stephan Fleet, our VFX supervisor, we’ll be like, how about four wrinkles? And they’re like, we’d be a lot more comfortable with five. And you’re like, oh no, well, no I feel that five starts to make it a little more unclear, makes it look like a wrinkled dog. I think maybe four, three to four. The whole time, I’m like, I get paid for this. I get paid to argue over the amount of wrinkles on a penis.”

Moriarty reflected on the chance to play bad but was still happy with Starlight’s allegiances:

“I loved being evil as the Shapeshifter. Not as Annie, that wouldn’t be right. It wouldn’t be justified. It would be a betrayal to the way that character is written. I would never want to arbitrarily become evil, just because I want to be evil. But short answer is yes, I would have loved a little bit longer of a period of time to indulge in that Shapeshifter-level of sociopathy. I loved being evil way more than I expected. I loved that schadenfreude incarnate type of thing. Loved it. Oh god was it fun.

Fukuhara shared a similar perspective on Kimiko:

“I think Frenchie and Kimiko have always been sort of the heart of the show and so I’ve loved playing that. As a fan of the show, I’ve loved watching that. So I don’t think I’ve ever wanted her to be morally questioned in that way, although, I will say, she’s made some questionable decisions in her past. But that’s in the past.”

Season five of The Boys premieres on Wednesday, April 8th with new episodes dropping weekly through the series finale on May 20th.
