In season three of Shrinking, things get complicated between best friends Summer (Rachel Stubington) and Alice (Lukita Maxwell) when Alice sleeps with Summer’s boyfriend Connor (Gavin Lewis), giving the always dramatic Summer a reason to be legitimately upset about someone else’s actions.
Awards Buzz spoke with Stubington about connecting with this chaotic character and how it feels to work with the cast members who say less in each situation:
“I think that Summer’s like a persona I put on sometimes when I want to get away with saying things that no person should say. I think that she comes and goes, mostly if I’ve had two vodka cranberries, I think that Summer comes out. [Working with the cast] I know who to look for when I’m saying one of my very special Summer lines. It’s cool understanding the way the comedy is going to weave through and how we’re going to play off of each other. But what I love about this show too is I think sometimes the quiet people say the craziest things out of nowhere and you’re like, I didn’t even know you had that in you.”
She shared how much she knew about Summer’s arc when she first heard about the role:
“I knew nothing. I had just graduated college and I got this audition and I saw the names that were part of it and I was like, it’s so nice to be able to audition but I’m never going to hear back ever. Going into it, I just knew that she was a high schooler. Even in the first episode, I feel like we were building that she wanted Alice to drink a little bit, but I felt like I knew this girl, and just to see where we are in season three, it’s so far beyond what I could’ve expected for Summer in the best way possible.”
