Interview: David E. Kelley and Eva Anderson on Adapting ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ for Television

In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Margo (Elle Fanning) has to figure out a plan when she gets pregnant and the father (Michael Angarano) has no interest in being involved, leading her to lean on support from her newly-engaged mother Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and ex-wrestler father Jinx (Nick Offerman) while seeking financial opportunity through an unexpected source: OnlyFans.

Awards Buzz spoke with creator and showrunner David E. Kelley and writer and executive producer Eva Anderson about the appeal of this material. Kelley talked about the importance of being faithful to a book when adapting it:

“That depends on the book itself. There can be books that have a germ of an idea or a good basic hook or structure, but the characters you may not jive with or you may want to go in different plot directions. I’ve done it different ways. The Undoing we started with the worlds created and went in in a different direction. Often you sort of let the story tell you. For me, at least, my process is you start with the characters and the story, you start crafting them, both the characters themselves and the story and at some point when it’s working, the story starts telling you where you want to go, where it lives best, where its strengths and deficits lie, same with the characters. And it can be an unwitting process that causes you to end up with a departure from the original source material. None of that happened in this book. The beginning worked, the middle worked, and the ending worked. Loved the characters. So the goal, jumping into this one was to be not just faithful to it but to live up to it. If we could realize on screen the entertainment and comedic and emotional successes that Rufi had in the book, then we knew we had something.”

Season one of Margo’s Got Money Troubles is streaming on Apple TV.
