Interview: Elle Fanning on the New Challenges of ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ and Having the Best Screen Parents

In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Margo (Elle Fanning) has to figure out a plan when she gets pregnant and the father (Michael Angarano) has no interest in being involved, leading her to lean on support from her newly-engaged mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) and ex-wrestler father (Nick Offerman) while seeking financial opportunity through an unexpected source: OnlyFans.

Awards Buzz spoke with Fanning about how this role feels like a new challenge for her following already impressive TV work in The Great and The Girl from Plainville:

“There were a lot of new challenges. I wouldn’t have picked it if there weren’t challenges, because I love a challenge. I’ve never played anyone like Margo before, I really haven’t. There’s such a resilience in her and she has such a specific voice and she’s very bold and witty, a lot of whimsy. She’s a really imaginative creative person and to try to kind of capture that. We’ve seen a lot of shows or movies about writers, trying to capture the writer’s point of view and make it also cinematic. But it all comes from Rufi’s novel, which is so beautifully written and is what drew me to the project in the first place. Having to rise to the occasion of embodying this really amazing girl who’s changing a lot, learning a lot about herself, facing a ton of obstacles but somehow still coming out hopeful and optimistic on the other side and doing what she has to do to really fight. Yeah, the motherhood aspect. I’m not a mom, so that was for sure a challenge of getting that right, because I knew that it was crucial to the series to show that authentically and I worked a lot on that.

She raved about getting to have the best onscreen parents:

“Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman? They are the best parents! Even though, yeah, they’re playing parents who are good but also complicated and not always there for Margo, but there’s always love and I think that’s what just pours out of this series, the abundance of love that all the characters have for each other. Nick Offerman, I mean, he’s so incredible as Jinx. He worked so hard too. He trained for this. He did all of his own stunts for the wrestling, everything, and he brings just this twinkle and there’s so much depth to that character. It’s so specific and beautiful, and of course he’s obviously so funny. Michelle is someone who’s like family to me now. I think through this experience, we’ve really bonded for life.”

Watch the video above to hear what she’d like to see in the future if there’s more to this story (this interview was recorded before the show’s renewal for season two) and how she’s feeling in the afterglow of her first-ever Oscar nomination for Sentimental Value.

Season one of Margo’s Got Money Troubles is streaming on Apple TV.
