Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: The only series back this year is Slow Horses, which was nominated for the first time last year.
Returning contenders: For its first season, The White Lotus won the limited series directing prize and was nominated here for season two. Andor, Bad Sisters, The Last of Us, and Severance were all nominated for their first seasons. Squid Game won this prize for its pilot.
Past nominees: Yellowjackets and Bridgertonwere nominated for their pilots but missed out on season two. The Handmaid’s Talewon this prize for its pilot and received an additional nomination that year, plus three more nominations, most recently for season four.
The field: There are only a few shows that submitted just one episode for consideration, namely Amor Fati (The White Lotus), Hello Goodbye (Slow Horses), O X (Squid Game), Good Sisters (Bad Sisters), and Into the Light (Bridgerton), plus new contenders Episode 1 (The Day of the Jackal), Episode 1 (Dept. Q), and The Coming Night (Black Doves). From the buzziest shows, it’s very possible that there could be multiple from the same series, be it Day One (The Last of Us), The Price (The Last of Us), Through the Valley (The Last of Us), Chikhai Bardo (Severance), Cold Harbor (Severance), 7:00 A.M. (The Pitt), 6:00 P.M. (The Pitt), 7:00 P.M. The Pitt), Harvest (Andor), or Who Are You? (Andor). Recognizable names could also help Elisabeth Moss secure a nomination for Execution (The Handmaid’s Tale) or Taylor Sheridan for Landman (Landman). Other possibilities include Dreadnought (The Diplomat), Full Circle (Yellowjackets), and This Is What Happens (Your Friends and Neighbors), though all three shows have additional episodes submitted as well.
