Review: Is “Jurassic World: Rebirth” The Film Fans Have Been Waiting For?

Jurassic World: Rebirth brings back the heart of the franchise, taking place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion. The film celebrates the legacy of Jurassic Park, introduces new characters, and delivers a lot of dinosaur action while exploring themes of survival and the ethical consequences of human intervention.

In this latest entry, dinosaurs have failed to thrive in the modern world. The few surviving dinos have been relocated to a remote tropical island while a pharmaceutical company sees this as the perfect opportunity to engineer a breakthrough treatment for heart disease.

Rebirth introduces a new cast, led by Scarlett Johansson as Zora Benett, a covert operations expert. Johansson is joined by Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid and Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis who embark on this mission to extract DNA from various Dinosaurs for this new miracle drug.

With six feature-length films, two television series, and numerous video games, the Jurassic franchise continues to evolve—and Rebirth is likely to satisfy most fans. The film features a mix of new and familiar dinosaurs, including Titanosaurus, Aquilops, and Anurognathus, as well as the return of favorites like Spinosaurus and Mosasaurus. This time, however, it also introduces genetically engineered mutant species like the six-limbed Distorus Rex and the unpredictable Mutadon. One particular standout is Dolores, an Aquilops dinosaur that is sure to steal audiences’ hearts.

Director Gareth Edwards captures the scale and intensity of the dinosaurs with dynamic, on-location filmmaking in Thailand. Rebirth’s special effects skillfully blend nostalgic practical with modern artistry, making the dinosaurs feel startlingly real once again.

David Koepp, who wrote the original Jurassic Park, returns to the franchise, bringing a familiarity to the narrative. The score by two-time Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) weaves John Williams’ iconic music with new, emotionally resonant themes that heighten moments of wonder and fear.

However, not everything comes to life. The characters often lack emotional depth, and the story feels divided—two parallel plotlines that never quite gel, making the narrative feel disjointed at times. The family storyline, in particular, feels rather forced and undeveloped.

Despite a few predictable beats, Jurassic World: Rebirth rekindles the magic that made the original so unforgettable. If you loved Jurassic Park for its sense of wonder, thrilling suspense, and tactile realism, Rebirth just might be the reboot you’ve been waiting for.
