Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: Original series Ripley, Baby Reindeer, and Lessons in Chemistry were up against anthology series Fargo, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, and True Detective: Night Country.
Returning contenders: The first season of Monster was nominated for two of its episodes in 2023. The first season of The White Lotus won this prize in 2021 and is now competing in the drama series category.
Past nominees: A Very English Scandal was nominated for the first edition of its anthology series, while the second earned just one nomination for its music.
The field: Some projects contend as a whole while others are separated into individual episodes. Adolescenceis a definite lock, and having four episodes submitted makes its main competition less certain, with pilot After Hours (The Penguin) and finale A Great or Little Thing (The Penguin) likeliest. Its next most probable competition also opted for four hours, with Blame It on the Rain (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) and Don’t Dream It’s Over (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) possible. Other well-regarded possibilities include Disclaimer, American Primeval, Apple Cider Vinegar, Jolly Ranchers (Dope Thief), It’s Not That Serious (Dying for Sex), The Verdict (Presumed Innocent), The Witness (Presumed Innocent), The People in the Dirt (Say Nothing), and Zero Day. In the last five years, only one TV movie has been nominated here, and both Mountainhead and Rebel Ridge are hoping to change that. While Black Mirror did win three back-to-back Best TV Movie prizes, it’s never once been nominated for directing. Common People (Black Mirror), Eulogy (Black Mirror), and USS Callister: Into Infinity (Black Mirror) are all looking to change that.
This year’s predicted nominees: Adolescence, Blame It on the Rain (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Disclaimer, After Hours (The Penguin), The People in the Dirt (Say Nothing), Zero Day
