Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!

Last year’s nominees: Nominated last year for the first time since its back-to-back prizes in 2017 and 2018, Black Mirror is eligible again this time. Filling out the rest of the category, original series Ripley, Baby Reindeer, and Fellow Travelers were up against anthology series Fargo and True Detective: Night Country.

Returning contenders: The first season of The White Lotus won this prize in 2021 and is now competing in the drama series category.

Past nominees: A Very English Scandal was nominated for the first edition of its anthology series, while the second earned just one nomination for its music.

The field: The frontrunners in this category are Adolescence, A Great or Little Thing (The Penguin), and Disclaimer. Given that its first season didn’t get any nominations in this category, it’s hardly guaranteed that Blame It on the Rain (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) and The Hurt Man (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) would get in here even if the series does well in other categories. Three TV movies made the cut in this race two years ago, which makes Mountainhead making it in most likely here, with Rebel Ridge also distinctly possible. Expect to see at least one installment of the popular anthology series that’s historically done well in this race: Common People (Black Mirror), Eulogy (Black Mirror), and the sequel to a winning installment, USS Callister: Into Infinity (Black Mirror). Other options include Good Value Diet Soda (Dying for Sex), The People in the Dirt (Say Nothing), Toxic (Apple Cider Vinegar), Bases Loaded (Presumed Innocent), Exile (Sirens), Persephone (Sirens), Episode 1 (Zero Day), and Episode 4 (Zero Day).

This year’s predicted nominees: Adolescence, Disclaimer, Good Value Diet Soda (Dying for Sex), A Great or Little Thing (The Penguin), USS Callister: Into Infinity (Black Mirror)
