Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!

Last year’s nominees: Two nominated shows last year, Girls5eva and The Other Two, are over. Hacks won its second prize on its third nomination, while the previous winner, The Bear, was nominated again. Abbott Elementary returned to the lineup after a year off following a win for its pilot. What We Do in the Shadows earned just one nomination for season five after scoring two for season three and three for season two.

Past nominees: Only Murders in the Building scored one nomination for each of its first two seasons but was left off for its third.

The field: A number of the top contenders have submitted just one episode, like A Slippery Slope (Hacks), The Promotion (The Studio), Back to School (Abbott Elementary), Once Upon a Time in the West (Only Murders in the Building) and The Last Thanksgiving (Shrinking). Like last year, The Finale (What We Do in the Shadows) represents a lone submission for a historically popular show in this category. After only submitting one episode for its first two years, it’s a gamble for both Ice Chips (The Bear) and Napkins (The Bear) to be in contention. There are two shows with two episodes on the ballot that could compete: Pilot (Nobody Wants This), Bat Mitzvah Crashers (Nobody Wants This), Lake House (The Four Seasons), and Ski Trip (The Four Seasons). Other possibilities include Pilot (Adults), Pilot (Deli Boys), Tinker Tailor Older Spy (A Man on the Inside), and Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Overcompensating).

This year’s predicted nominees: Back to School (Abbott Elementary), A Slippery Slope (Hacks), Pilot (Nobody Wants This), The Last Thanksgiving (Shrinking), The Promotion (The Studio), The Finale (What We Do in the Shadows)
