Nominations for the 83rd Golden Globes will be announced on Monday, December 8th, and Abe Friedtanzer, Latasha Ford, Sari Cohen, and Shadan Larki from the Awards Buzz team came together for a conversation to discuss the frontrunners and current predicted nominees in all major categories!
Unlike its film section, the TV prizes from the Golden Globes offer an interesting midway point that’s timed separate from the Emmys, which cite programs that run from June 1st to May 31st. As a result, many series celebrated by the Emmys will compete against new shows and seasons that won’t be in contention until the next Emmy season. In the supporting categories, all series – drama, comedy/musical, limited/anthology, and TV movie – are grouped into one, providing an intriguing and highly competitive field.
On the drama side, newly-minted Emmy winner The Pitt is expected to go head-to-head with Severance, just one of a number of shows, including Andor, The Last of Us, The Morning Show, 1923, and The White Lotus, returning from a hiatus. Will any of those, or newcomers like Task, Paradise, or Pluribus, bump some of last year’s honorees like The Diplomat, Slow Horses, and Squid Game?
When it comes to comedy, The Studio is likely to dominate, taking on last year’s winner Hacks. But what else will make the cut? Sophomore series Nobody Wants This hasn’t been received as positively but could still contend if historical Globe trends are true, and will voters move on from previously-feted fare like Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Only Murders in the Building?
Adolescence is all but guaranteed to continue its awards season sweep as this year’s successor to Baby Reindeer, fending off competition that could include Dying for Sex, the latest Monster iteration, and any number of limited or anthology series. And is the TV movie officially dead, or will Renée Zellweger earn her third Globe nomination for playing Bridget Jones?
Watch the video below and leave your thoughts in the comments! We’ll be back after nominations are announced to unpack the results.
