Interview: Adam J. Graves on Telling an Authentic Story about Child Labor with the Oscar-Nominated ‘Anuja’
February 12, 2025Daughters follows four young girls and their incarcerated fathers as they prepare for a father-daughter dance. “One thing I have learned in over a decade of working with girls is that they already know what they need. The wisdom lives inside of them.” This quote from Daughters highlights that the documentary is, in part, a celebration of girlhood and the power of young women.
In spending years following and getting to know the subjects of their documentary, co-directors Natalie Rae and Angela Patton created not only a powerful bond but a safe space for these children to discuss and explore their relationships with their incarcerated fathers, and for the fathers to reflect on the deep wounds left by the separation. The result is a powerful exploration of humanity and the bonds we share—physical, familial, or spiritual. Daughters is simply necessary viewing.
