In James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, a young Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) arrives in New York in search of his hero Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) and connects with Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) as he begins his music career, which involves a professional and occasionally volatile relationship with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and a temperamental romance with Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning).
Awards Buzz spoke with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael about how his many collaborations with Mangold informed the way he shot this film. Watch the video above to hear how he approached the musical performances and worked to make them feel intimate.
A Complete Unknown opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, December 25th.
