November 25, 2024Universal Pictures’ ‘Wicked’ leads the pack with 20 nominations, Warner Bros.’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ garners 16, and Netflix’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ follows with an impressive 11 nods at this year’s Astra Awards
The Hollywood Creative Alliance will honor this year’s most revered movies at the 2024 Astra Film Awards on Sunday, December 8, at the Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles.
Dual ceremonies will be held throughout the day, beginning with the Astra Creative Arts Awards, hosted by actor, comedian, and writer Peter Kim, followed by the 2024 Astra Film Awards, with 2x Emmy and NAACP-winning comedian Loni Love presenting. Both ceremonies will be recorded and streamed on KNEKT.tv and YouTube.
Nominations have just been announced, with Universal Pictures’ Wicked in the lead. This weekend, the film broke records at the global box office, setting the bar for the 2024 award season. Hollywood Creative Alliance awarded Wicked 20 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and Jon M. Chu for Best Director. It now stands as HCA’s most nominated film in the organization’s eight-year history.
Warner Bros. Dune: Part Two comes in second, amassing 16 nominations. The sequel is up for Best Picture, Best Director (Denis Villeneuve), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cast Ensemble, among others.
Emilia Pérez comes in third place with a total of 11 nominations. The film first garnered international acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has continued to earn recognition. Hollywood Creative Alliance has nominated the musical/crime/comedy for Best Picture, Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, Best Supporting Actress nominations for both Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, and gave it a nod for Best Cast Ensemble.
The Substance, Mubi’s body horror comedy that everyone has been buzzing about, gathered a total of 10 nominations. Hollywood Creative Alliance recognized the film in the categories of Best Picture, Best Actress for Demi Moore, Best Supporting Actress for Margaret Qualley, and Best Director for Coralie Fargeat.
Right behind The Substance is Amazon MGM’s Challengers, starring Zendaya, bringing in 9 nominations. Paramount Pictures’ Gladiator II ties with 9, A24’s The Brutalist collected 8, Neon’s Anora accumulated 7, Focus Features’ Conclave also earned 7, Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot has 5, which tied with Searchlight’s A Real Pain, which also stands at 5.
Last week, Hollywood Creative Alliance announced that Academy Award-winning, BAFTA-winning, and Emmy-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Edward Scissorhands, Chicago) would receive the Inaugural Artisan Icon Award, composer Kris Bowers (Green Book, The Color Purple, The Wild Robot) would be honored with the Artisan Achievement Award, and cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi (Strange Darling) would be awarded the Artisan Breakthrough Award at the Astra Creative Arts Awards ceremony.
