Interview: Anna Sawai on Becoming Mariko and Inhabiting the Incredible World of ‘Shōgun’

This year’s most nominated series at the Emmy Awards is Shōgun, a monumental adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel set in Japan in the 1600s. Key to its storyline is Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), whose knowledge of both Japanese and English allows her to serve as an interpreter for Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) as they navigate a particularly treacherous power struggle.

Awards Buzz spoke with Sawai about getting to know her character and particularly preparing for the season’s memorable penultimate episode. Watch the video above to hear about her working relationship with her costars and how she feels about the response to the show.

Anna Sawai is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. Shōgun is available to stream on Hulu.
