Sundance Interview: Daisy Friedman on Disability Representation, Judaism, and Going from College to Sundance with ‘Unholy’

In Daisy Friedman’s short film Unholy, Noa (Olivia Nikkanen) attends her family’s Passover seder, which presents some uncomfortable moments as her grandmother is eager to have her try all the food and she’s not the only one with questions and comments about Noa’s new feeding tube that she’s had put in due to her gastrointestinal disorder.

Awards Buzz spoke with Friedman about the real-life inspiration for this film, which wasn’t a Passover seder but instead the interaction of disabilities and Jewish culture, specifically around food. Watch the video above to hear about Friedman’s experience making this film and how she feels about heading to Sundance when she’s still in college.

Unholy premieres at the Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. Fiction Short Films on Thursday, January 23rd.
