AJFF Interview: Daniel Robbins on Crafting the Cultural Specificity and Universality of ‘Bad Shabbos’

In Daniel Robbins’ Bad Shabbos, David (Jon Bass) arrives at the New York City apartment of his parents Richard (David Paymer) and Ellen (Kyra Sedgwick) with his fiancée Meg (Meghan Leathers), who is in the process of converting to Judaism and whose Catholic parents are joining them for Shabbat dinner. Family dynamics make for one very chaotic evening that deals with more than just religious observance divides.

Awards Buzz spoke with Robbins about the kind of film he wanted to make and the inspirations he drew from to create a winning comedy. Watch the video above to hear about the Jewish references he included and how different audiences have responded to the film.

Bad Shabbos is screening as the Opening Night film at the 2025 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival.
