Emmy Nominee Interview: Marilyn Fitoussi Holds The Key to Bringing ‘Emily in Paris’ Fashion to Life!

“Even the most beautiful hot couture dress, if it doesn’t fit a character properly, I’m not going to put it on them.”

Marilyn Fitoussi discussed her recent Emmy nomination, viewing it not as a goal itself, but as a “cherry on the cake” that recognized her passion and dedication to storytelling through costume. She emphasized that her design philosophy is driven by emotion, character development, and narrative, rather than trends or brands. Having worked in Mexico for 13 years, she brings a deeply emotional and character-focused approach to her work, always prioritizing an actor’s confidence and the story’s needs.

She took Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz behind the scenes of her design process, which begins with the actor’s physical form—their shape, complexion, and movement—to ensure costumes are flattering and embody the character’s power and personality. She aims for clothing to evoke emotion, “sing a song,” and tell a story, helping actors feel beautiful, confident, and strong. Marilyn even shared an anecdote about helping an actress feel like a “femme fatale” for the first time.

Looking ahead, Marilyn is keen to evolve the main character’s style in future seasons, aiming to break Parisian fashion stereotypes and introduce a more mature, powerful version of the character with a “worldwide touch” while maintaining French elegance. We also touched upon specific looks from the show and the historical context of items like ballet flats. Check out the full interview below:

“I just need to fall in love with the clothes. The clothes needs to sing me a song and to help me to build this character, to help me to tell my story. I’m telling story with clothes.”

What’s Next with ‘Emily in Paris’:

Alike many others, we are so looking forward to Season 5 of ‘Emily in Paris’! Here’s a quick rundown of what we anticipate and what we’d like to see.

In Season 4, Mindy’s Eurovision journey ended, and she broke up with Nicolas. She then received an offer to judge a talent show in her home country. Gabriel earned his Michelin star and reunited with Camille. Given Mindy’s new job offer, both characters may have new storylines, or possibly none at all. Emily’s romantic entanglements continued. She was with Alfie, then Gabriel, then left Gabriel for Marcello. Marcello, despite their rocky start, convinced Emily to move to Rome for both love and business. This business venture, if successful, could impact Emily’s new relationship. The Grateau agency is opening a Rome office to manage the Umberto Muratori account, a fashion brand inherited by Emily’s new boyfriend. Emily will handle communications for this account. She quickly secured a loft in Trastevere, highlighting her consistent good fortune.

The Season 4 finale left us wondering if Rome will be the new setting for Emily’s adventures. We’re also curious about her European Union work visa status.
