“The technology’s really good, but what made this film so special is they actually did race around Formula 1 circuits around the world doing 180 mile an hour wheel-to-wheel, like the story that we were selling. That’s what made the film so good!”
In this exclusive feature for Awards Buzz, “F1” Stunt Choreographer Luciano Bacheta and Supervising Stunt Coordinator Gary Powell take Latasha M. Ford behind the tracks to reveal the filming secrets behind the movie’s epic car chases.
The experts discuss the logistics of legal liability, the importance of cross-collaboration, and the process of building trust on set. They also share insights into managing minor injuries and the high-intensity training for Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, highlighting the actors’ impressive learning curves. Additionally, the team unveils their thoughts on the film’s Oscar potential and much more. Check out the full interview below:
“You’ve got multimillion-dollar actors sitting in cars, you know? So, you know, there’s that pressure there. But it was a challenge that everyone took on, particularly Joe, Gerry Bakhauser, and all that, to sort of push for this. It’s the same as Top Gun. They fly their planes and like F1 everything you see is real. There was no cheating.”
About ‘F1’
Brad Pitt and Damson Idris starred in the high-action packed Apple TV+ film which made its highly anticipated debut in theaters and IMAX via Warner Bros. on June 25, 2025. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), the action movie features a supporting cast of Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem.
The film follows Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a former Formula One racer forced into early retirement after a major crash. Thirty years later, a team owner (Javier Bardem) recruits Hayes to return to the sport to partner with and mentor rookie driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) for Team APXGP.
Co-produced by seven-time F1 champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, the production focused heavily on authenticity. The movie was filmed during actual Grand Prix weekends throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons at iconic locations such as Monza and Abu Dhabi. To capture a realistic feel, the fictional APXGP team set up bases at each circuit, allowing the cast to film alongside real race drivers. Check out the official trailer below:
