In Kevin and Matthew McManus’ Redux Redux, Irene (Michaela McManus) travels from parallel universe to parallel universe killing the man who killed her daughter over and over again. Somewhere long after she’s lost count of how many times she’s found him, she meets Mia (Stella Marcus), who’s running away from – and towards – her own demons.
Awards Buzz spoke with Michaela and Stella about their own familiarity ahead of this project with different universes and sci-fi as a genre. Stella shared:
“The integrity of a movie is really reliant on, does it make sense, and not in the way of, is it logical, but just, does it follow the rules of the universe that the movie creates. It was already so well-constructed in the script before I got involved, so my job was made easy, I just had to show up and bring to life this really wonderful thing that the brothers had created, but I also was not well-versed at all in sci-fi. I mean, I like horror films, but mostly I would say psychological thrillers and not action-y bloody stuff, so I was really thrown into that world, but very grateful for that.”
Michaela added her perspective:
“For me, when watching any kind of big concept sci-fi film, I’m often watching it with my husband and pausing the film, and I’m like, “Okay, so take me back to that,” or I’m trying to understand all of the minutiae behind it. That’s what I think is so unique about what my brothers crafted, is that you don’t need to be a sci-fi genius to follow the story. It takes a lot of pulling back on their part, and I thought they did that pretty seamlessly. So I think that’s what’s cool about this movie. Yes, it’s sci-fi, but you don’t have to be a sci-fi junkie to enjoy the film.”

Redux Redux opens in theaters on Friday, February 20th.
