In And Her Body Was Never Found, Jeff (Polaris Banks) and Keren (Mor Cohen) go on a camping trip but can’t stop fighting. The cameras are rolling the whole time, capturing all of their unpleasant interactions, and things take a turn for the more uncomfortable – and potentially deadly – when they cease playing these characters but keep arguing as Polaris and Mor.
Awards Buzz spoke with Banks and Cohen about what their expectations were of the finished product when they were very much in the process of making it, just the two of them. Banks shared:
“We shot it, and every day, we’d come back from set, and we’d be relieved and a little proud of ourselves, but I would have these weekly little existential crises of ‘What are we making? Is this a story? Did I pick the wrong project?’ Then I started editing it and I finished the first two scenes and I was showing Mor and I showed my brother Hilarion. I was like, it’s pretty good. It’s turning out really well. I just dragged my favorite takes together and tried my hardest to make it work. I was like, this is effective and powerful. It, in a lot of ways, is out of my hands where you try and control a movie and then when you start putting it together, it’s more like raising a kid, where you’re like, well, I didn’t expect them to play soccer. I thought they’d play baseball or whatever. And the movie has its own flavor that you can’t plan.”
Cohen commented on the challenge of keeping themselves separate from the characters they were playing:
“We kept getting this question in Q and As, did we take the characters with us when we went back home, and I think it’s most embarrassing to admit that we kind of were the characters when we started filming and thankfully just left them behind. It’s just so tough to work with your partner not on set. Everybody keeps saying, do not work with your family! They’re correct. This is a big risk to take and I don’t know how we pulled through.”
