Interview: Gerran Howell on Whitaker Having a Much Better Day in Season Two of ‘The Pitt’

In season two of The Pitt, Whitaker (Gerran Howell) is a resident who’s having a much better day than he previously did as a medical student. In addition to following strong instincts and keeping his emotions in check on the job, he’s in the good graces of Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), who asks him to house-sit during his impending sabbatical, which he thinks may give him some helpful distance from a potentially problematic relationship he’s formed with the widow and child of a patient who died.

Awards Buzz spoke with Howell about whether he’s enjoying this remarkable shift of circumstances and attitude for this previously very put-upon character:

“Compared to a lot of other people, he just seems to be floating around, and maybe it’s unfair to say that when you compare it to season one. I think that was the worst possible day. That was a real gauntlet of fire, so compared to that, it’s not going too bad. I could definitely say I had a lot of fun in season one, being a character who isn’t really dealing with it very well and having everything thrown at him. It was something new every week to contend with, whether that was a bodily fluid or something unbelievably tragic. It’s fun. It gives you something to do. But I like how he’s flourished in in season two and has settled into that environment. I think it’s a nice contrast to see him like that or at least appearing to have everything under control. But I hope people see that maybe he’s taking on a lot and that he’s maybe accumulating a lot of other people’s problems and not really externalizing how he’s feeling. I hope people catch on to that, because that isn’t good. I don’t think that’s sustainable, so I’m interested to see how that develops.”

The first two seasons of The Pitt are streaming on HBO Max.
