Nominations for the 32st Annual Actor Awards (formerly Screen Actors Guild Awards) will be announced on Wednesday, January 7th. Abe Friedtanzer, Scott Menzel, and Shadan Larki from the Awards Buzz team came together to offer insight and predictions for the film categories.
Throughout precursor season, the most significant role of this group is that their membership does overlap considerably with the membership of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, as opposed to critics’ groups and the Golden Globes. They also nominate exactly five people in each of the acting categories, meaning that there might be a clearer picture of who misses out when there isn’t room for an additional nominee in each of the races.
The most important place where that will be seen is the Best Actor in a Supporting Role race, since both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards honored the same six men. Jacob Elordi pulled off a surprise win at the Critics Choice Awards, and so it will be interesting to see if he manages to edge out Adam Sandler, seen as the most vulnerable from that lineup, or if someone else like Paul Mescal gets knocked out instead.
This will also be a test for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role race to see if both actresses from Sentimental Value can make the cut or if two other contenders from Marty Supreme crash the race. In the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, this is the last stand for Dwayne Johnson, who could do well with this crowd, and will determine whose chances might be less certain, like Ethan Hawke or Wagner Moura. Best Actress in a Leading Role is more of a toss-up, with Kate Hudson primed to do well here and the chances for someone like Chase Infiniti less certain.
In the Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture race, which doesn’t have a direct correlation to the Oscars even if it often matches up somewhat with Best Picture at the Oscars, One Battle After Another and Sinners are sure to be in, and Marty Supreme should be too, but what else will join them?
