Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!

Last year’s nominees: Two of the shows – The Gentlemen and The Ms. Pat Show – have new seasons on the way but haven’t premiered yet. The Bear is the two-time defending champ in this category, and it had two episodes nominated last year. Hacks won this prize for its pilot and has been back each year since, while Abbott Elementary scored its first-ever nomination last year, for its third season.

Past nominees: Only Murders in the Building received two nominations for its first season but hasn’t been back since then.

The field: The two shows that will likely go head-to-head for Best Comedy Series each have just one episode submitted, guaranteeing their place here: A Slippery Slope (Hacks) and The Oner (The Studio). Every episode submitted so far from The Bear has been nominated, but getting all three of this year’s installments – Tomorrow (The Bear), Doors (The Bear), and Napkins (The Bear) – seems like a stretch. The first, from Christopher Storer, who has a shot at taking this prize home for the third consecutive year, and the last, the directorial debut of star Ayo Edebiri, are probably likeliest. Out of the three installments submitted for its show, Please Touch Museum (Abbott Elementary) is the season finale and comes from last year’s nominee Randall Einhorn. Blow-Up (Only Murders in the Building) has a particular style, while season finale My Best Friend’s Wedding (Only Murders in the Building) is probably likelier than season premiere Once Upon a Time in the West (Only Murders in the Building). From four episodes submitted for the show, season finale The Last Thanksgiving (Shrinking), from Bill Lawrence, and Made You Look (Shrinking), from past nominee Zach Braff, are most probable. Pilot (Nobody Wants This) feels like a decent bet, with Rebecca’s Box (Nobody Wants This) also possible. While Lake House (The Four Seasons), as the pilot episode, could appeal to voters, Ultimate Frisbee (The Four Seasons) comes from star Colman Domingo and could therefore attract more attention. After receiving no nominations in this category over the course of its first five seasons, can The Finale (What We Do in the Shadows) change that for the now-ended show? This could also mark the first-ever nomination in this category for Michael Schur for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (A Man on the Inside). The important thing to note here is that there is a rule requiring a multi-camera comedy to be nominated here, which has been The Ms. Pat Show the past three years and B Positive, Mom, Will & Grace, and The Big Bang Theory before that. It feels like Here’s To You, Mrs. Schneiderman (Mid-Century Modern), the lone episode submitted by its show from the most-awarded person in this category, James Burrows, is going to grab that slot.

This year’s predicted nominees: Napkins (The Bear), Tomorrow (The Bear),A Slippery Slope (Hacks),Here’s To You, Mrs. Schneiderman (Mid-Century Modern), The Last Thanksgiving (Shrinking), The Oner (The Studio)
