Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd. From a list of 201 eligible films, 15 have been shortlisted. Five of those will be nominated. Read below for an assessment of the contenders and the predicted nominees.

The Alabama Solution director Andrew Jarecki was nominated in 2003 for Capturing the Friedmans. Apocalypse in the Tropics director Petra Costa was nominated in 2019 for The Edge of Democracy. Cover-Up director Laura Poitras was nominated in 2006 for My Country, My Country and in 2022 for All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and won in 2014 for Citizenfour. Folktales directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady were nominated in 2006 for Jesus Camp. 2000 Meters to Andriivka director Mstyslav Chernov won in 2023 for 20 Days in Mariupol. Come See Me in the Good Light is also on the shortlist for Best Original Song.
At the International Documentary Association Awards, only Apocalypse in the Tropics and Seeds contended for Best Feature Documentary, while Come See Me in the Good Light, Cover-Up, and Yanuni all received special mentions. At the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, The Perfect Neighbor took home five prizes, including Best Documentary Feature. Other nominees included 2000 Meters to Andriivka, The Alabama Solution (which won one prize, for Best Political Documentary), Apocalypse in the Tropics, and Cover-Up. Four shortlisted films – The Alabama Solution, Cover-Up, Mr. Nobody Against Putin, and The Perfect Neighbor are nominated at the Producers Guild of America Awards.
