Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd. There is no shortlist for this category, and nominations for the American Cinema Editors ACE Eddie Awards won’t be announced until the week after Oscar nominations are unveiled.
While typically the nominees in this race don’t only come from Best Picture contenders, it’s worth starting there as a guidepost, with One Battle After Another and Sinners sure things. Frankenstein, Hamnet, and Marty Supreme are also possible but far from guaranteed. While less than a dozen foreign-language films have ever been nominated in this race, at least one could get in this year, but there’s never been an occasion where more than one has contended in the same year. Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sirât, and No Other Choice could each garner votes. In addition to recognizing Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, and Sinners, the Critics Choice Association also cited F1, A House of Dynamite, and The Perfect Neighbor, which would become only the third documentary ever nominated in this category. Other options might be Avatar: Fire and Ash (the first film was nominated while the second wasn’t), Bugonia, Train Dreams, and Wicked: For Good following the first film’s nomination last year.
Predicted nominees:
F1
Hamnet
One Battle After Another
Marty Supreme
