Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd. Twenty films have been shortlisted, which will be winnowed down to five eventual nominees.

Powell and Schwartz were both nominated last year for the first Wicked, with additional nominations for animated work, How to Train Your Dragon for the former and Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Prince of Egypt for the latter. Schwartz won for Pocahontas and also appears twice on the Best Original Song shortlist this year. The first Avatar film was nominated in 2009 (composed by James Horner). Karpman was nominated in 2023 for American Fiction. Fendrix was nominated for a previous collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things. Göransson has been nominated twice, for Black Panther and Oppenheimer, winning both times. Zimmer has been nominated twelve times, winning twice, for The Lion King and Dune. Desplat has been nominated eleven times, winning twice, for The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water. Guðnadóttir won in 2019 for Joker. Bertelmann has been nominated three times, including last year for Conclave, and he won in 2022 for All Quiet on the Western Front. Britell has been nominated three times, for Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Don’t Look Up. Greenwood has been nominated twice, for Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog. Reznor and Ross were nominated three times, winning for The Social Network and Soul (they were also nominated for Mank that year).
From a number of film categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, Sinners and Avatar: Fire and Ash both took home trophies, while Bugonia, Captain America: Brave New World, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, A House of Dynamite, One Battle After Another, Tron: Ares, Truth & Treason, and Wicked: For Good all earned nominations. The Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes both nominated F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, and One Battle After Another, giving their prizes to Sinners, while CCA also cited Marty Supreme and the Globes chose Sirât.
