Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd.

Early on in the awards season, it seemed like last year’s nominee Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good) was going to win and could be joined by three different pairs of women from the same film: Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value) and Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) and Regina Hall (One Battle After Another), and Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme) and Gwyneth Paltrow (Marty Supreme). While Grande and Taylor both earned nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and Actor Awards, they were actually joined at all three instead by Amy Madigan (Weapons). So far, Madigan won at CCA while Taylor took home the Globe. Lilleaas and Fanning were cited by both the Globes and CCA but then missed at SAG, while A’zion only got a SAG mention and both Hall and Paltrow haven’t shown up anywhere. Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) was nominated by both CCA and SAG, while Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine) was nominated at the Globes. Glenn Close (Wake Up Dead Man) seems very unlikely at this point, especially given how her film has been performing, Tânia Maria (The Secret Agent) is a very distant possibility if the surging love for her film carries into the supporting categories and embraces international performers, which could also benefit Mariam Afshari (It Was Just An Accident).

Predicted nominees:

Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme)

Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good)

Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value)

Amy Madigan (Weapons)

Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another)
