Oscar Predictions: Best Actress

Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd.

Here we have our most competitive acting category of the year! Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) is safe and Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) seems so to after her Golden Globe win and trio of prizes from the National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess! Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value) felt like a lock until SAG shut out international performers and another one of NEON’s contenders has slowly edged out her film as the frontrunner in that race. The other three performers to earn bids from both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes were Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Emma Stone (Bugonia), and Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee). Infiniti and Stone were also cited by SAG, who chose Globe nominee Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue) for their fifth slot. It’s strange not be predicting Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), an Oscar nominee last year for the same role who secured a Globe nomination but saw her film snubbed for the top category. Other Globe nominees who could garner votes include Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby). It would be quite a shock for Sydney Sweeney (Christy) to materialize at this point in this race, but it’s possible.

Predicted nominees:

Jessie Buckley (Hamnet)

Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You)

Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another

Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value)

Emma Stone (Bugonia)
