Nominations for the 98th Oscars will be announced in 24 categories on Thursday, January 22nd.
Months ago, Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine) and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) felt like sure things but now they’re extreme longshots with just Golden Globe nominations to their names. Five men have been nominated at both the Globes and the Critics Choice Awards: Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), who won prizes at both ceremonies, Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), who won a Globe, Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams). With one five slots, SAG dropped both Moura and Edgerton from that list and added in Globe nominee Jesse Plemons (Bugonia). Other Globe-nominated possibilities whose films haven’t fared as well as expected are George Clooney (Jay Kelly) and Lee Byung-hun (No Other Choice), while Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein) could ride the wave of popularity for his film to a nomination. Three-time winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Anemone) has been mysteriously absent from this race given his prestige and, despite strong mentions, Will Arnett (Is This Thing On?) doesn’t appear to be gaining any traction.
Predicted nominees:
Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme)
Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another)
Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon)
Michael B. Jordan (Sinners)
Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent)
