In David Wain’s Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) finds her idyllic Kansas life uprooted when her longtime boyfriend and now fiancé Tom (Michael Cassidy) cashes in his celebrity sex pass, prompting a spur-of-the-moment trip to Los Angeles to get even and do the same, provided she can find Jon Hamm and convince him to help her go through with it.
Awards Buzz spoke with Wain and Deutch about working together on this wild script and film. Deutch shared what sold her on the idea:
‘‘I did not know if I was the right fit. I just wanted to be, I had to be involved. I read the script. It was recommended to me by someone kind of random and they told me a little bit about it and I was like, I need to get my hands on this script. I read it and I had never laughed so hard reading a script. I reached out to David to meet with him because I just wanted to be a part of it. So I didn’t know if I was the right person. I wanted to be the right person, because I just thought it was brilliant and the kind of movie that I love to see. I was like, I want to see this movie so badly. And that’s not always the case. Oftentimes you’re drawn to a character or you’re drawn to something specific about the project, but this was just, in general, I was like, I want this movie to get made. I want to see this movie, and I felt compelled to force my way into being in it.’
Wain stepped in to note that Deutch very much needed to be a part of the film for it to actually happen:
“It’s kind of a cliche that they’re like, oh, I can’t imagine anyone else ever having you know played this role. For Zoey, from the moment I first met her, I was like, I can’t imagine somebody else playing the role, and if it doesn’t work out logistically or schedule-wise, then let’s just not do it.’
Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass opens in theaters on Friday, July 10th.
